0191 Newcastle Numbers

Why an 0191 number helps your business

The North East has a strong sense of local identity, and the 0191 code is part of it. The code is shared by Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and the towns along the Tyne and the coast, so a single number speaks to a large and loyal customer base. Shoppers, students, healthcare staff and the region's manufacturers all deal every day with firms that show an 0191 number.

People are more willing to ring, and more inclined to trust what they hear, when the number on an advert or website looks local. An 0191 number gives that impression without an office on the Quayside. You can run the line from Leeds, Edinburgh or a home office and still present a North East face to every caller.

About the 0191 area code

0191 covers Tyne and Wear and parts of County Durham. That includes Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland, Washington, Chester-le-Street and the city of Durham. The code is followed by a seven-digit local number, written as 0191 xxx xxxx. From outside the UK, callers dial +44 191 and then the seven digits.

Until 1995 the code was written 091. It gained its extra digit on PhONEday, when a 1 was inserted into area codes across the country.

Who uses Newcastle numbers

Businesses serving the whole region

A firm covering both banks of the Tyne, Wearside and Durham does not need a separate number for each place. One 0191 number works across all of them, which keeps adverts, websites and vehicle livery simple and consistent.

Student and university services

Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Durham universities all sit within the 0191 area. Letting agents, tutors, removal firms and student services use an 0191 number so that students and their parents see a local contact they can rely on.

Manufacturing and engineering suppliers

The North East has a long industrial history, from shipbuilding on the Tyne and the Wear to today's car and engineering plants. Suppliers, recruiters and maintenance firms working with these sectors use an 0191 number to show they are close at hand when something needs fixing quickly.
