The PSTN switch-off: move your business lines before 2027

Analogue and ISDN lines in the UK close by 31 January 2027. Move to digital calls now, keep every number, and switch on a date that suits you.

The deadline

UK analogue and ISDN lines close on 31 January 2027

108 days to go

After that date, phone lines and anything that relies on them will stop working unless they have moved to a digital service. Moving early means a calm switch on your timetable, not a rush at the end.

What is changing

Phone calls are moving to the internet

The old copper telephone network, the PSTN, and the ISDN lines many businesses use are being retired across the UK. Calls will travel over broadband instead, which is how our cloud phone system and SIP trunks already work.

Your phone numbers do not have to change. We move them to our network, so customers keep calling the same numbers while your calls go digital.

  • Analogue business lines and ISDN2 / ISDN30 close
  • Your numbers can be kept and moved to us
  • Better features than a traditional line
  • Works from the office, home or anywhere

Check before you switch

What in your business uses a phone line?

Phones are the obvious one. Many businesses forget the other equipment plugged into a line.

Phones and phone systems

Desk phones, an on-site phone system (PBX) or ISDN lines.

Alarms

Intruder and fire alarms that call a monitoring centre. Ask your alarm company.

Card machines

Older payment terminals that dial out on a phone line.

Lifts and door entry

Emergency phones in lifts, and door entry systems.

Fax machines

Fax can move to fax to email on our phone system.

Monitoring equipment

Telecare, meters and machines that report over a line.

Your options

Three ways to move

A cloud phone system

Replace your lines and old phone system with a hosted PBX, from £4.99 per user a month. Calls work on desk phones, mobiles and laptops.

SIP trunks

Keep your on-site IP phone system and connect it to our network over the internet instead of ISDN.

Virtual numbers

Keep your numbers and divert them to mobiles or another phone, from £4.99 a month each.

FAQ

PSTN switch-off questions

When is the PSTN switch-off?
Openreach is closing the UK's analogue telephone network and ISDN lines, with all lines due to close by 31 January 2027. Many areas have already moved.
Will I lose my phone numbers?
No. Your numbers can be moved to Alphatalk before your old lines close, so customers keep calling the same numbers.
Is my business affected?
If you have a traditional phone line, ISDN lines or equipment such as alarms or card machines that use a phone line, yes. If you already use a cloud phone system or SIP trunks, your calls are already digital.
Do I need new phones?
Not always. Many IP desk phones work with our cloud phone system, and you can also answer on a mobile app or your computer. If you need new handsets, we supply Yealink phones ready to use.
What about my alarm and card machine?
Check with the companies that supply them. Most offer a digital or mobile version. We can advise which of your lines carry phone calls and which carry other equipment.
How long does it take to move?
It depends on how many lines and numbers you have. Starting early gives time to move your numbers and test everything before the deadline.
